The European Elite 2018: Are public cloud giants redefining the Nordics' IT landscape?

The Nordics section of our roundtable discussion hears our panellists discuss whether huge investments in the Nordics by public cloud giants is reshaping the region's IT sector

With AWS pledging to build a datacentre region in Stockholm, Microsoft committing to build a facility in Oslo next year and Google recently opening a new cloud region in Finland, the Nordics is set to see huge investments in public cloud over the coming years.

But what impact will the arrival of AWS, Microsoft and Google datacentres in Scandinavia mean for the region's IT sector and, more importantly, for its resellers?

Steinar Sønsteby, CEO of Oslo-based NOK 32bn-turnover VAR Atea, has already played down claims that the burgeoning growth of public cloud vendors such as Microsoft and AWS in the Nordics will spell the end of on-prem server sales for channel partners.

"I don't know of any public cloud customer we have that doesn't buy servers on-prem. I am not saying that public cloud isn't going to grow, but 10 years ago I said public cloud is going to take a long time and people thought I was crazy, but it has taken a long time. It is coming - of course it is - but it is add-on and it is nothing to be scared of," he said.

But the introduction of in-country datacentre facilities across Scandinavia will open up new opportunities for resellers, according to Ricoh Europe's EMEA director of ITS Services and Solutions Dan Davies.

"Some of the big public cloud providers investing in Denmark has opened up opportunities around managed services for resellers. It is an area to watch with future opportunity for sure," he said.

But Canalys analyst Robin Ody echoed Sønsteby's remarks that public sector entities in the Nordics are still investing in their own datacentre facilities despite upcoming investments from public cloud vendors.

"If we were to look at Sweden in the public sector, they have invested very strongly in its datacentre business, which is partly a regulatory issue because of the caution they have with data being held in Sweden," he said.

"There are some particularities about how companies do business which has led to a huge investment in datacentre and data management and the security which wraps around it."
